What is the All Grit Experience?
The All Grit Experience is an organization looking to serve inner-city schools, shelters, group homes, halfway houses, etc., to promote literacy and reading to individuals who are usually overlooked when discussing educational initiatives and efforts. This organization's primary purpose is to provide another level of services and resources to urban communities to help meet individuals' needs by promoting literacy and reading to foster positive personal development by implementing reading into their daily lives.
This organization believes that we can build positive relationships with the community through reading and provide another level of education through monthly readings. The meetings are designed to instill critical thinking skills by having meaningful discussions based on the book, facilitating a level of accountability for members to read daily, attending monthly meetings, and engaging in open conversations and value and respecting others' views and opinions. The book club members are encouraged to accept responsibility for educating themselves outside of structured classroom settings. Literacy and reading are core competencies when discussing education.
The books are selected to cover an array of topics. The book selections are geared towards entertainment, history, biographies, mental illness, abuse, bullying, relationships, and other issues that directly impact their communities. The book selections are designed to ask open-ended questions to facilitate critical thinking. This skill-set is essential because thinking objectively and evaluating issues, and forming an opinion will extend well past the club meetings.
